Sometimes the best photoshoots are the ones that aren’t planned months in advance. Over the last year, my photography business has taken a big (and exciting!) turn into the world of dramatic sports photography. From working with high schools, cheer teams, and even a competitive soccer league, I’ve been able to bring athletes and families images that feel larger than life. It’s been a shift that I never expected, but one that has changed my business for the better.
This past weekend, though, I wanted to take that same energy and bring it closer to home.
While I was out on a long Saturday run, an idea hit me—why not create a fun, dramatic shoot for my daughter Amelie and a few of her friends to celebrate their very first year of volleyball at Quist Middle School?

I sent out a last-minute invite (less than 24 hours’ notice) and, luckily, the girls were not only available but showed up full of excitement and ready for something special. We set up smoke, fire, and lights to give it the full “Media Day” vibe—because if you’re going to do it, why not go all in?

And wow, did they deliver.
What started as a fun idea quickly turned into an unforgettable evening. The girls laughed, hyped each other up, and brought so much personality to the shoot. It really felt like we were hosting a real Quist Middle School Media Day, but with even more giggles and inside jokes.
As a photographer, it was one of those moments that reminded me why I love what I do—capturing not just a sport, but the friendships, the energy, and the joy that comes with being part of a team.

For families in the 27J school district, this was more than just a photoshoot. It was a chance to celebrate these amazing athletes and their first season, giving them memories that will last far beyond middle school.
To Amelie, Brooklyn, and Mayla—thank you for trusting me with your first official volleyball photoshoot. You made it feel like the real deal, and I hope these images always remind you of this special year.
Here’s to many more seasons, more friendships, and maybe a few more impromptu “media days” along the way.
