Mattie & Kyle's Mountain Engagement Session in Estes Park | Estes Park Engagement Photographer

When Mattie first reached out about planning engagement photos, she wasn't completely sure what she wanted for the session.

There was one thing she knew for certain, though.

She wanted mountains.

And she wanted golden hour.

Fortunately, Estes Park is one of the best places in Colorado to find both.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, we met at Knoll Willows Open Space just outside of Estes Park for an evening engagement session surrounded by mountain views, open meadows, and some absolutely incredible light.

A Meaningful Gift

One of the things that made this engagement session particularly special was how it came about.

The session was a gift from Mattie's mom, Mandy.

Mandy and I first met several years ago through a mutual friend, and over the years we stayed connected. That friend is no longer with us, so maintaining those connections and relationships has always meant a little more to me.

When Mandy reached out about gifting an engagement session to Mattie and Kyle, I was excited not only because I love photographing couples in Estes Park, but because it felt like an opportunity to continue one of those connections that life unexpectedly places in front of you.

As photographers, we often meet clients through friends, family, and referrals. Sometimes years later those relationships come back around in ways you never expect, and this session felt a little like that.

Engagement Photos in Estes Park

If you're looking for mountain engagement photos in Colorado, it's hard to beat Estes Park.

Knoll Willows Open Space offers a little bit of everything that makes Colorado beautiful. Open fields, mountain views, winding trails, and plenty of room to explore while creating a variety of backdrops without having to travel far.

One of the things I loved most about this location was how much variety we found simply by walking and exploring together. Within a relatively small area, we were able to create images that felt completely different from one another while still keeping those beautiful mountain views in the background.

For couples who want engagement photos that feel natural and distinctly Colorado, locations like this are hard to beat.

A First Photoshoot and a Lot of Laughter

Like many people, Mattie admitted she was a little nervous before the session.

In fact, this was her first professional photoshoot.

That's completely normal, and honestly, something I hear from couples all the time.

The funny thing is that after the first few minutes, most people realize there isn't much to worry about.

Mattie and Kyle were incredibly easy to work with from the start. They trusted the process, embraced my ideas, and never hesitated when I suggested trying something new.

More importantly, they seemed genuinely happy to be there together.

The best engagement photos don't come from perfect poses. They come from genuine interactions, natural laughter, and couples who simply enjoy spending time together.

Mattie and Kyle made that easy.

As we wandered through the open space, talking, laughing, and exploring different areas, the session felt less like a photoshoot and more like an evening spent outdoors with two people excited about the next chapter of their lives.

Perfect Colorado Weather

As photographers, we often joke that we can't control the weather.

But every once in a while, Colorado gives us exactly what we hope for.

The weather on the evening of Mattie and Kyle's engagement session couldn't have been better.

Clouds gradually rolled into the area, creating soft, flattering light that photographers dream about. Instead of harsh sunlight, we had beautiful even light throughout most of the session, making every location look incredible.

Then, as the evening continued, the sky began to light up with beautiful golden tones and sunset colors that seemed to stretch across the mountains.

It was exactly the kind of evening Mattie had envisioned when she told me she wanted mountains and golden hour.

Sometimes everything simply comes together.

This was one of those nights.

Looking Ahead

One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is that they're often the beginning of a relationship rather than the end of one.

They're a chance to celebrate an exciting season of life, slow down for an evening, and create memories before the wedding day arrives.

For Mattie and Kyle, that meant spending an evening surrounded by mountain views, enjoying perfect weather, and documenting a moment they'll be able to look back on for years to come.

And for me, it was an opportunity to work with two wonderful people while continuing a connection that started years ago through family and friendship.

Mattie and Kyle, thank you for trusting me with such an important milestone. I had an amazing time exploring Estes Park with you both, and I wish you nothing but happiness as you begin this next chapter together.

Congratulations!
