There are weddings that are memorable because of the details, and there are weddings that are memorable because of the people.

Amanda and Keith's wedding at Beaver Meadows Resort in Red Feather Lakes was both, but what I'll remember most is how relaxed and present they were throughout the entire day.

This wedding was especially meaningful for me because Amanda and I go way back. My family moved to Thornton in 1997, and Amanda, her twin sister, and I spent our middle school and high school years attending school together.

Amanda and I were both in band throughout those years, and while we weren't necessarily the friends who hung out every weekend, we were always friendly with one another. We shared classes, rehearsals, football games, concerts, and all the memories that come with growing up in the same community.

Like most people after graduation, life took us in different directions, but we've stayed connected over the years. When Amanda reached out and asked if I would photograph her wedding, it felt a little surreal to realize that nearly thirty years had passed since those middle school band days.

Needless to say, I was honored to be there.

An Intimate Ceremony at The Outlook

Amanda and Keith met through a dating app around 2020 and built a relationship that felt very similar to the wedding day they planned—simple, genuine, and focused on what mattered most.

Rather than a large traditional ceremony, they chose to keep their ceremony intimate with just twenty guests gathered at The Outlook, one of the ceremony sites at Beaver Meadows Resort. From the very beginning, their wedding felt different from many of the weddings I photograph. There was no first look, no elaborate timeline, and no pressure to follow traditions simply because they're expected. Instead, Amanda and Keith focused on creating a day that reflected who they are as a couple. The ceremony was personal, relaxed, and filled with the people who mattered most to them.

A Hidden Gem Wedding Venue in Red Feather Lakes

For couples looking for a Colorado mountain wedding venue that feels peaceful and secluded, Beaver Meadows Resort is truly a hidden gem. Located outside of Red Feather Lakes, the property offers everything people imagine when they think of a mountain wedding. Open meadows stretch across the landscape while horses wander through the fields. A small creek winds through the property, and the surrounding mountains create a beautiful backdrop in every direction. One of my favorite moments of the day happened during dinner. As guests were enjoying their meal, I looked out across the field and spotted an actual beaver running through the property while horses grazed nearby. It was one of those uniquely Colorado moments that couldn't have been scripted better. While the resort is easy enough to find, the final few miles take you down a rugged dirt road that makes you feel like you've left everyday life behind and entered your own private mountain retreat.

As a photographer, it's the kind of venue that offers beautiful scenery no matter where you point your camera.

When the Rain Rolled In

Of course, Colorado mountain weather always has a way of reminding us who's really in charge. During cocktail hour, dark clouds rolled overhead and a sudden downpour moved through the property. Guests quickly scrambled for cover beneath roof overhangs, umbrellas, and anywhere else they could stay dry. Some made a dash toward the reception building while others simply embraced the situation and waited for the storm to pass.

The rain interrupted some of the family photos we had planned, and my first instinct was to get my cameras inside and protected from the weather. But after a few minutes, I had a different thought. These are the moments people remember. So I headed back outside and started documenting guests huddled together beneath umbrellas, laughing under covered walkways, and making the best of an unexpected mountain rainstorm.

After all, that's what insurance is for.

What stood out most wasn't the rain itself—it was Amanda and Keith's reaction to it.

Or maybe I should say their lack of reaction. They simply didn't let it bother them.

The rain came.

The rain went.

And they continued enjoying their wedding day.

Looking back, I think that attitude says a lot about who they are as a couple. They seemed completely focused on the fact that they were getting married and surrounded by the people they love. Everything else was just background noise.

A Reception Focused on What Matters Most

While the ceremony remained intimate, the reception welcomed approximately 120 guests and transformed the evening into a lively celebration.

One of the highlights of the night was the incredible bluegrass band, Moonstone Quill. Their music fit the atmosphere perfectly and brought a fun, relaxed energy to the reception throughout the evening.

Amanda and Keith also chose to skip many of the traditional reception activities that couples often feel obligated to include.

There was no bouquet toss.

No garter toss.

No packed schedule of formalities.

Instead, they focused on the moments that mattered most to them.

They shared a first dance as husband and wife.

They cut their cake.

Family and friends gave heartfelt speeches.

And most importantly, they spent the evening enjoying time with the people who had gathered to celebrate with them.

The entire day felt genuine and authentic—less about checking boxes and more about creating memories.

Final Thoughts

Nearly thirty years after meeting Amanda in school, I found myself standing in the mountains of Colorado documenting one of the most important days of her life.

One of my favorite parts about being a photographer is that sometimes life comes full circle. You meet people during one chapter of your life and then, years later, get the opportunity to be part of a completely different chapter.

Photographing Amanda and Keith's wedding felt a little like that.

Their wedding wasn't built around expectations or traditions. It was built around the people they love, the place they love, and the life they're building together.

And honestly, that's what made it so memorable.
